Trend Alert: How to wear stripes

Some things never go out of fashion. Stripes are one of these things. Season after season, year after year, their simple structured lines give even the most vintage style a modern twist. Vertical, horizontal or diagonal – like people, stripes come in many different sizes and colours.

But stripes come with a warning: the main thing to keep in mind when wearing stripes is that unless you are shaped like a model, stripes can make you look less zebra and more zebra crossing.

Horizontal vs Vertical
The golden rule when it comes to stripes is that horizontal can make you look broader, and vertical taller. However, stripes don’t always have to be so monochrome, rather they can be used to balance: If you are flatter on top, a horizontal striped blouse can give the illusion of curves, and vertical stripes on trousers or skirts elongate your legs making you look taller. Like this black and gold lehenga by Payal Singhal – the gold streaks at the bottom of the skirt will had length to any height.

Multi vs Mono
The same is the case with multi vs mono coloured stripes. Although they look super cool and fun, too many colours can be difficult to pull of by drawing attention to all the wrong areas. That’s why we love Papa Don’t Preachs take on the trend – their tone-on-tone striped beading is subtle yet on trend, and super easy to wear.

Mix vs Match
The only thing better than stripes are more stripes! Mixing and matching different types of stripes to create a more unique and bold look. We love how Raw Mango has combined this white and navy striped silk sari with an inverted striped top. Super chic!
